The spotlights flickered in anticipation. The nervous pulse of the catwalk could be felt throughout New York. Although the next few minutes had already been sketched in the stars for decades, Jourdan was unaware of how life-changing this trip to Primark would be. Blissfully, she tried on glasses and posed for the mirror, attracting the crucial part of her future, like a magnet. As the model scout observed from the shadows, they saw the future flash before their eyes. In a sharp second, their mind was filled with images of this teenage girl on the covers of Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Wonderland and commanding a global audience on the luxury fashion runway. And so the story goes … Jourdan Dunn was welcomed onto her first runway in New York. The dresses adored being worn by the beautiful, black model. From Prada to Balmain, the clothing lines became obsessed with her style. And so did fifty-six magazine covers and fifty-seven fashion and beauty campaigns!

Flashes erupt from every corner of the runway, photographers hoping to get the perfect picture. Unfortunately for some troubled onlookers, the picture can only be perfect if the skin is white. Jourdan has had to defend her colour, culture and hair in an industry of vultures time and time again.

But her black remains beautiful and worth millions more than any amount of racism.
